OTC drugs or their prescription equivalents will no longer be covered after Jan. 1

11/29/2016

Starting Jan. 1, 2017, we will no longer cover over-the-counter (OTC) drugs or their prescription equivalents for some of your ConnectiCare patients with commercial plans. The one exception is Nexium OTC, which we will continue to cover as long as it is prescribed by a doctor.

This change may affect some of our step therapy treatments, so please refer to the pharmacy section of our website for updates.

This upcoming change will affect most of our members with employer-sponsored coverage. It won't affect our members with individual or Medicare plans or members with employer-sponsored plans for municipalities. It's best to refer to your patient’s list of covered drugs before prescribing any medication.

We are letting your patients know about this formulary change and that it means they will have to pay a store's listed cost of OTC drugs, such as:

Therapeutic Class Medications

Gastrointestinal medications (OTC-strength only)

Axid, Pepcid, Tagamet, Zantac, Prevacid, Prilosec, Zegerid

Nasal steroids

Flonase, Nasacort, Rhinocort

Antihistamines

Allegra, Claritin, Zyrtec

Ophthalmic antihistamines

Alaway, Zaditor
