Keeping Busy and Staying Social

Stuck at home by bad weather, friends in Florida or a lack of activities? Nicole and Barb, ConnectiCare social workers, talk daily with many of our members.

Here are their ideas for staying active and enjoying each day.

Get active!

SilverSneakers® and senior centers offer free fitness classes to be active and make new friends. One SilverSneakers member started a weekly potluck lunch with people from her class!

Fire up technology

Video chatting and social media can help you keep up with friends and family. Video calls also let family members see how their loved one is doing. For help getting started, many senior centers offer computer classes.

Volunteer

Contact your local Agency on Aging for help finding a volunteer activity. You can read to a classroom, provide companionship or work at a local food pantry, for example.

Need a lift?

Senior transportation and Dial-A-Ride services can bring you to the doctor’s office, supermarket, hair salon and anywhere else you’d like to go. Many senior centers also provide transportation.

Other tips from our experts

  • If you’d like to talk to someone, your plan includes mental health benefits. Find a mental health provider using “Find a doctor” on connecticare.com/medicare.
  • Religious groups like church or temple congregations will often arrange home visits for members who can’t attend services.
  • Check out events and exercise classes at our ConnectiCare centers. You can view our online calendar at connecticare.com/medicare, or follow us on Facebook for upcoming events.

Call 1-800-224-2273 (TTY: 1-800-842-9710) from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week to speak with Medicare member services. They can refer you to a case manager for help with finding community resources, support groups, transportation, volunteer opportunities and more.
