For people recovering from depression, maintaining an even weight might not be a bad idea. While dieting has been shown to boost the self-image of some, there is evidence it can cause negative mood changes. Should you decide you would like to go on a diet or begin an exercise program, talk with your doctor. He or she will be able to help you find one that’s right for you. Scientists have not come up with an antidepression diet.
A short walk can be an almost magic mood booster and anxiety reliever in times of stress. Studies have shown that regular aerobic exercise, such as walking or running, has a positive effect on mood. People who exercise regularly may respond more completely and quickly to antidepressants than those who do not. A short walk, at least three days a week may speed recovery. Any distance is good. Try to go a little farther each time you walk.
Exercise, a good diet, proper sleep, thinking positive thoughts, enjoying friends and family, stress reduction, and staying on your medication are powerful tools for recovery. Don’t let the tools get rusty from disuse.
