      • Shaping Tomorrow’s Health Policy

Healthcare is the most complex policy issue facing the nation today. ConnectiCare is working with policy makers to improve the health system, provide affordable health insurance choices, and reduce health costs.

We actively engage business, government, hospitals, and physicians to find common ground to improve the system. ConnectiCare is a member of the Connecticut Health Plan Association and our national trade association American Health Insurance Plans (AHIP).

In 2010, ConnectiCare introduced a Health Care Reform website designed to educate our audience on the changes and opportunities from the health care reform law with easy to understand information.

We also seek forums to educate the community on positive improvements health plans are making to the health care industry. We participate with CBIA, The Insurance and Financial Services Cluster, the Metro Hartford Alliance, The Business Council of Fairfield County, the Connecticut Hospital Association, and the Connecticut Chambers of Commerce.

The U.S. healthcare system has constantly changed and improved over its modern history. With the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), we have now entered a new era. ConnectiCare will implement the law, seek new business opportunities, and continue to shape the regulatory debate going forward.

Connecticut has one of the best private healthcare systems and some of the highest quality of care in the world. We believe that disease management, wellness programs, complex medical management, product choice, and cost containment, all need to be part of the current health reform solution. Over the next few years, there will substantial opportunity to advance our health system in terms of cost, quality, and access.

There are multiple solutions to cover the uninsured in Connecticut, our state’s bigger challenge is keeping products affordable and controlling costs. In Connecticut, we are fortunate to have access to excellent physicians and hospitals. Yet as a result of this extensive system and the ever increasing medical technology, more people are seeking healthcare, there are more products and treatments available to consume, and costs continue to rise.

Connecticut currently ranks fifth nationally in terms of health status. Our current employer based health insurance system provides insurance to about 70% of its employees, one of the strongest private sector commitments in the country. We are doing a lot of good, but we need to build on it. Connecticut should aim to be number one nationally in health status and make healthcare a competitive advantage for the economy of this state.

ConnectiCare will continue to play an active role in these solutions.
