Depression Medication Adherence Program

ConnectiCare’s Quality Improvement Department has added a new Health Management Program for members. The Depression Medication Adherence Program (DMAP) is a TELEPHONIC Program that is an enhancement to the Depression Education member mailing program ConnectiCare has had in place since 2002.

The DMAP is a TELEPHONIC support program for members who are newly prescribed an antidepressant. Following the recommendations of Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHQR), the DMAP program has been developed with the goal of encouraging members to stay on their antidepressant, thereby, increasing their medication adherence and the occurrence of follow-up visits.

The Psychiatric Nurse Case Manager for the Program will focus on tips for taking the medication prescribed by their prescribing physician. The following guidelines will be reinforced with members:

  • Take medication as prescribed
  • Don’t miss a dose
  • It can take 4 to 6 weeks or more for the medication to take effect
  • Even if you are feeling better, don’t stop taking your medication without first checking with their Doctor.
  • If you have any questions about your treatment, ask.

In 2007, ConnectiCare's HEDIS rate for antidepressant adherence among members in the acute phase of their illness (12 weeks) was 67%, and only 52% during the 6-month continuation phase. In addition, only 58% had at least 3 follow-up visits, one being with the prescribing practitioner.

ConnectiCare looks forward to working with you to increase overall medication adherence and follow-up visits for these patients. Call ConnectiCare @ 1-888-867-7987 to speak to the DMAP Psychiatric Nurse, to find out more about this exciting and innovative program.
