Kids Learn to Shop for Healthy Food at Price Chopper
Tours Led by ConnectiCare Wellness Professionals

Farmington, CT - January 17, 2007 - Kids can discover the clues to growing strong and healthy on a Price Chopper Supermarket Sleuth Nutrition Tour. 4th and 5th graders will learn about fruits, veggies, low fat foods and more through hour long tours that are fun and challenging, and help make healthy eating a lifelong habit. Professional wellness instructors from ConnectiCare health plans have volunteered to lead the free tours at Price Chopper stores.

The program was created by Price Chopper to combat childhood obesity which has reached epidemic proportions. The tours educate children to make healthy food choices. Tours can be requested by local schools and teachers.

Children tour the supermarket with a ConnectiCare wellness instructor and learn how to read a food label, determine servings per package, and how nutrients such as calories, fat, fiber, and calcium make up that serving. The children also learn about eating more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low fat dairy foods to reduce total fat and calorie intake, and much more.

“We are happy to volunteer for this wonderful program. It is never too early to start the building blocks for a health diet. This program will benefit them over a lifetime,” says Teresa Athas, Manager of Wellness Programs at ConnectiCare.

“The occurrence of obesity related diabetes in younger children is a massive public health problem, but it can be reversed and stopped with adjustments to diet and consumption. We want to help educate kids so they can avoid the debilitating ailments of obesity and diabetes.”

Children will receive an accompanying workbook designed for follow-up use in the classroom and home.

Letters have been sent to educators and administrators inviting schools to participate. Price Chopper has six Connecticut locations; Bristol, Newington, Southington, Torrington, Vernon, Putnam, and Waterbury.
